GREAT BRITAIN: Victoria, 1837-1901, AR medal, India General Service Medal, left facing effigy of Queen Victoria wearing a diadem and veil, surrounding the head is the inscription VICTORIA REGINA // Victory crowning a seated nude warrior, in the exergue of the medal are lotus flowers and leaves, with JOWAKI 1877–78, HAZARA 1888, SAMANA 1891, WAZIRISTAN 1894–95 clasps, with new ribbon, awarded to Sepoy Punjab Singh, 3rd Sikhs Infantry, VF, ex Ajit Singh Collection. The India General Service Medal was approved on 1 March 1854. It was awarded for various minor military campaigns in India, during 1852 to 1895. Each battle or action covered by the medal was represented by a clasp on the ribbon; 24 were sanctioned, the maximum awarded to one man is thought to be seven. JOWAKI 1877–78: In 1877 the British government in India proposed reducing the allowance to the Jowaki Afridi tribe for guarding the Kohat Pass. In response the tribe cut the telegraph wire and raided into British territory, leading to two British sorties into its territory. The first sortie of three columns in 1877 was led by Colonel Frederic David Mocatta, 3rd Sikh Infantry and the second of two columns in 1877-1878 by two brigadier generals, Charles Patton Keyes and Campbell Claye Grant Ross. HAZARA 1888: The Hazara Expedition of 1888, also known as the Black Mountain Expedition or the First Hazara Expedition, was a military campaign by the British against the tribes of Kala Dhaka (then known as the Black Mountains of Hazara) in the Hazara region of what is now Pakistan. SAMANA 1891: The Samana is a ridge of hills running east-west, south of Khanki valley, marking the southern edge of the Tirah region. It is about 12 miles long and its highest point is 6000 ft. The Khyber Pass is some 30 miles to the north. It had been captured by the British in the Miranzai Expedition of 1891, along with two main forts built on it, Fort Lockhart in the middle and Fort Gulistan on the western end. WAZIRISTAN 1894–95: Also known as the Mahsud Expedition, it involved the Battles of Wana and Mukeen.
