QING: AE charm, CCH-441, 63mm, zhou yuan tong bao // dragon & phoenix type. Based on the Later Zhou Dynasty reign title Zhou Yuan. The original circulating coins were cast from melted-down bronze statues from Buddhist temples. The coins are believed to have amuletic properties because they were made from Buddhist statues, and are particularly effective in midwifery, hence the many later-made imitations. This example was likely cast in the late Qing Dynasty or early Min Guo (Republic) period.
