CHINA: AR medal, ND (ca. 1939-43), hand-engraved inscriptions on a Yuan Shi-kai "Fat Man" dollar: qian jiang xian / ma wang miao jing bei dui / zao wan wu zhang dian / qian jiang jing cha ju / di er fen suo zhang li ming shou / jing zeng ("Qianjiang County Mawang Temple Garrison (keibitai), Corporal (gocho) Hayamaru-dono ("compliments of Qianjiang Police Department, Chief of the Second Precinct, Li Mingshou") // yong jiu ji nian ("eternal commemoration"), attached with chain and bar, toned, EF. Given the Japanese name, rank, and honorific of the recipient, this appears to be a gift from a local collaborationist official during the Japanese occupation of Qianjiang County in central Hubei between 1939 and 1943. Another example, also presented to Corporal Hayamaru and made by the same engraver (ex Shanghai Hosane, Spring 2023, Lot 1828, sold for RMB ¥32,200), bore the name and title of Wang Chengxuan, the Inspector of the Qianjiang Police Department. Archival records show that Wang was tried in 1946 at the Hubei High Court on charges of being a "hanjian", an extremely pejorative term equivalent to "quisling" in the Western world.
