ABBASID: AE fals (3.53g), Shayzar (Shaizar), ND, A-S293, citing the governors Safwan b. al-Fadl on the obverse and Muhammad b. Salih on the reverse, 2nd known example, but on a round flan rather than the somewhat octagonal flan of the first known piece, circa AH240-300, VF, RRRR. First example sold in our Auction 36, lot 337. Shayzar is located along the Orontes River, about 15 miles northwest of Hamah, known from ancient times and now a suburb of the modern city of Muhradan. It was the capital of the Manqidhid tribe, who ruled there circa 1025-1155.
