ABBASID: al-Mu'tazz, 866-869, AR dirham (2.79g), Samarqand, AH255, A-236.1, without his heir 'Abd Allah, most unusual for dirhams dated AH254 or 255, and very clear date on this piece, F-VF, RRR. Possibly an issue of the Tahirid ruler Muhammad b Tahir II, who ruled AH248-259, but strictly in the name of the Abbasid caliph, as were all essentially Tahirid silver coins dated after AH211; normal Samanid copper fulus of Nasr I were struck at Samarqand and al-Shash in AH255, of which the al-Shash examples often cite the Tahirid ruler as "al-amir Muhammad".
