ABBASID: al-Muqtadir, 908-932, AR medalet (5.25g), 19mm, a special decorative silver piece in the caliph’s name, al-muqtadir on the reverse, billah on the obverse, with a raised outer border on each side; the silver blank was probably cast, the legends hand-engraved and dozens of tiny circles hand-punched after the initial engraving, as a few of these circle overlap the engraved letters, VF, RRR. The same punch was used to create the center of the "m" in al-muqtadir and the "h" of billah. The side with billah was considered the obverse, as the attached mount kept billah lever but al-muqtadir sideways. The purpose of these pieces is not known, though the mount suggests that it was attached to an object where both sides could be read.Another example was offered in the CNG Islamic Auction 4, lot 82, with a different suggestion for this items' purpose.
