ABBASID: al-Muti', 946-974, AR dirham (2.97g), Tiflis (Tbilisi in Georgia), AH(3)37, A-265, Bennet, mint name sufficiently legible, clear date, and first reported Abbasid dirham of Tiflis in the name of al-Muti', who continued to be cited as the caliph on the dirhams of the first Ja'farid ruler Mansur I b. Ja'far (301-340 / 914-952), known dated AH342-343 (Bennett-75/76), which were struck from dies much more carefully engraved than the latest purely Abbasid dirhams, including this piece; weakly struck; unpublished and unique, VF-XF, RRRR. Historically important, as it confirms that the local Ja'farid ruler continued to recognize only the Abbasid caliph until at least AH337. The dirhams dated 342-343 are either posthumous issues or indicate that Mansur I ruled after AH340.
