Around 351 BC Artaxerxes launched a campaign to recover Egypt which had revolted under his father. The campaign eventually failed. Not long after that defeat Anatolia, Cyprus and Phoenicia declared their independence from Persian rule. In 343 BC Artaxerxes tasked Carian prince Idrieus with suppressing the rebellion in Cyprus. Idrieus succeded with assitance from 8000 Greek mercenaries as well as forty triremes commanced by Phocion the Athenaian and Evagoras, son of the elder Cypriot monarch Evagoras.
