AFRICA: GABON: copper neck ring money (1097g), Opitz p.237, ca. 18.5 x 13.5 x 5cm, with a ribbed exterior with two ridges, worn by women and used as bride price, VF to EF, ex Charles Opitz Collection. According to Opitz, a husband can remove his wife's neck ring by pulling the two ends apart using vines and stakes in the ground. During a raid on an enemy village, however, warriors simply cut off the women's heads in order to take the rings as spoils.
