AFRICA: GABON: copper neck ring money (2256g), Opitz p.237 (plate example), Ballarini p.222 fig. 4.16-17, ca. 19.5 x 17 x 4cm, with a ribbed exterior with two ridges, pleasing color, worn by women and used as bride price, EF, ex Charles Opitz Collection. According to Opitz, a husband can remove his wife's neck ring by pulling the two ends apart using vines and stakes in the ground. During a raid on an enemy village, however, warriors simply cut off the women's heads in order to take the rings as spoils.
