AFSHARID: Nadir Shah, as viceroy, 1729-1735, AR 1/3 Mughal rupee (3.72g), Herat, ND, A-2737-var, same legends and design as types A-2736 (AR abbasi, 5.34g, and AR 2 shahi, 2.68g); the edge clearly shows that this piece was never clipped or acid-treated; believed to be unique, RRR. Herat was a very common early Safavid mint for both silver and gold, then abbruptly shut down in or shortly after AH978, after which it became a very rarely used Safavid and subsequently Afsharid mint, except for a brief Shaybanid series about AH996-1006 and Afsharid AH1153-1161. It resumed as a common mint AH1188-1308 with a few later copper coins. Unlike silver and gold, copper fulus were struck at Herat fairly continuously from the late 900s until AH1347.
