ALGARBE: Musa b. Muhammad, 1234-1262, AR square dirham (1.56g), NM, ND, A-4275 (ex A-I410), Vives-2123, always without mint and date, amir al-gharb / al-musta`in bi-llah / musa bin muhammad bin / nasr, ibn mahfuz // Maghribi formula allah rabbuna / muhammad rasuluna / al-`abbas imamuna ('God is our lord, Muhammad our messenger, al-`Abbas [i.e., the Abbasid caliph] is our imam'), an attractive mint state example of this popular type, NGC graded MS61. The ruler is entitled amir al-gharb, "amir of the west", i.e., of the Portuguese district of Algarve. It is now presumed that the actual mint was located at Niebla (Labla in Arabic), near the city of Huelva in Spain, near the border with Portugal.
