ALGERIA: AE medal (146.4g), ND (ca. 1910?), MdP.M.1863, 68mm bronze medal of Chales de Foucauld by Anastase (Démètre "Anastase" Anastasescu), monk standing ¾ right within oval with CHARLES de FOVCAVLD to right and IeSvS / CARITAS below cross // view of the oasis of Tamanrasset in a mandorla, not in Escande, BRONZE and cornucopia privy mark on edge, Choice About Unc. After an agitated youth and a brief military career that brought him to Algeria, Charles de Foucoauld became an explorer and travelled through the most remote regions of Morocco, which earned him the gold medal of the Society of Geography. He returned to the Orders in 1890 and was ordained a priest in 1901; he retired to Beni Abbes and devoted himself fully to the poor. The reverse of the medal evokes this period, inspired by a drawing that Father de Foucauld himself made of his hermitage. In 1905, the leader of the Tuaregs authorized him to settle in Tamanrasset. It is there that he was assassinated in 1916 during a raid.
