ALGERIA: French Occupation, AE medal (155.7g), 1853, Escande-211, Fayolle-146, Ruedas-57, 67mm bronze medal for the Enlargement of the Algiers Cathedral, by Oudiné, facing view of Algiers Cathedral with palm tree at left and crucifix with climbing grapevine at right and P.H.FÉRAUD.ARCHI. / ELEVE-DE / CONSTANT.DUFEUX. in exergue // 15-line inscription within beaded circle with EMPIRE FRANCAIS - MINISTERE DE L'INSTRUCTION PUBLIQ ET DES CULTES around, nice brown coloration, CUIVRE and pointed hand privy mark on edge, Choice UNC. In 1832, following an agreement with the local inhabitants, the French appropriated the beautiful Ketchaoua Mosque to serve as a Catholic church; subsequently, as it could no longer accommodate the congregation, it was demolished, rebuilt, and considerably enlarged. The original mosque occupied scarcely more than the area currently occupied by the cathedral's choir. The great nave, the aisles, and the staircases providing access to the monument were entirely built by the French.
