ALGERIA: French Occupation, AE medal (40.27g), 1840, Escande-15, 41mm bronze medal on the Defense of the Fortress Mazagran, by Montagny, battle at the fortress wall with smoke all around and flag in tatters, and with "123 FRANÇAIS CONTRE 12,000 ARABES / COMBAT DE MAZAGRAN / ARMÉE D'AFRIQUE / 1840." in exergue // "123 SOLDATS / DU 1er BATAILLON D'AFRIQUE / ENFERMÉS / DANS LA PETITE REDOUTE DE MAZAGRAN / SOUS LES ORDRES DU CAPITAINE LELIEVRE / ONT SOUTENU / 4 ASSAUTS DE 12,000 ARABES / ET LES ONT MIS EN FUITE, / APRÈS 4 JOURS DE COMBAT, / DU 2 AU 6 FEVRIER / 1840.", lightly cleaned, but very attractive, rare, plain edge, Unc. In 1832, following an agreement with the local inhabitants, the French appropriated the beautiful Ketchaoua Mosque to serve as a Catholic church; subsequently, as it could no longer accommodate the congregation, it was demolished, rebuilt, and considerably enlarged. The original mosque occupied scarcely more than the area currently occupied by the cathedral's choir. The great nave, the aisles, and the staircases providing access to the monument were entirely built by the French.
