AMIRS OF MIKNASA (Meknès): Musa b. Abi'l-'Âfiya, ca. 917-938, AR dirham (1.82g), NM, AH322, A-E455, Sunni kalima divided between obverse & reverse, name madyan above and title al-nasir li-din Allah below the obverse, al-imam above and musa below the reverse; date formula in the reverse field; Madyan was the son of Musa b. Abi'l-'Afiya and the title al-Imam refers to the Spanish Umayyad caliph 'Abd al-Rahman III; unpublished and unique, VF, RRRR. The Zenata tribal chieftain Musa b. Abi'l-'Afriya was originally an advanced military officer for the Fatimid Imam al-Mahdi from about 917 until 931, then switched his loyalty to the Spanish Umayyads. An equally rare and unique dirham of Musa b. Abi'l-'Afiya citing the Fatimid was struck at Fès in AH320 (sold in our Auction 50, lot 236, 1.91g).
