AMRELI: COLLECTION of 65 copper paisas of Amreli (under Baroda): Sayaji Rao II, 1819-1847, 32 pieces of many subtypes of C-29 and C-30, including pieces dated AH1253, 1256, 1257, 1262; Ganpat Rao, 1847-1856, 6 pieces, all type C-39.1, dated AH1266; Khande Rao, 1856-1870, 19 pieces, several varieties of general type Y-1, some dated AH1277; and Sayaji Rao III, 1875-1939, 8 pieces, type Y-3, some dated AH1312 or 1313, many overstruck on earlier issues, most grade between nice Fine and VF, a few worse, several better, including a few lovely bold EF examples, an important research group for the local coinage of Amreli, retail value $1000, lot of 65 pieces, ex Paul Stevens Collection. For the entire series, the average weight is between about 6.5g and 7.5g, but with occasional pieces in the 4g to 6g range, and as heavy as 10.5g. It is likely that there is only one denomination for the entire series, the full paisa, except for the square issue of Sayaji Rao III, which is probably a 1/4 or 1/3 paisa (not represented in this collection; I have found references to 2.13g and 2.44g for this type).
