ANCIENT INDIA: Harappan Primitive Money, ca. 3000-2500 BC, various sizes (37.50g), all with central hole, generally used for necklaces but allegedly also for trade, given the great variety of size & weight, known from excavations at Harappan. Group of 87 circular discs, varying from less the 3mm to over 12mm diameter, plus two large thick similar round objects, also with central hole, perhaps intended as end pieces for a bracelet, neckless or belt. A smaller group was offered for sale at the New York auction XXV (January 2011), total weight 10.64g, which fetched $1700 (the gold London closing price was $1368.50 per ounce on the day of the sale).
