MAHISMATI: Anonymous, 2nd/1st century BC, AE unit (7.54g), Pieper-811-var, Brahmi mahismati in center, wavy line & uncertain symbol above, 3-arch hill (sideways) nd hollow cross below, uniface; overstruck on an unpublished type of Mahismati, showing the female deity Lakshmi and part of the same Brahmi legend; a remarkable overstruck type that seems to be unique; VF on Fine host, RRRR. The legend shows that the undertype is an issue of Mahismati, but apparently unpublished type. Mahismati was a local city in the Middle Narmada Valley. An inferior example of Pieper-811 was sold in our Auction 36, lot 1025, the only example of Mahismati filed on CoinArchives.
