ANGLO-GALLIC: AQUITAINE: Eleanor, duchess, 1137-1204, AR denier (1.04g), after 1189, Elias-11b, S-8011, two cross pattées, m above, A below, + DVCISIT // cross pattée, + AGVITANIE, VF, ex H. A. Parsons Collection. This type is attributed to Eleanor of Aquitaine, who regained her rule of the duchy after the death of her husband, Henry II, and her release from imprisonment. Some writers speculate that the obverse initials stand for moneta Alienora. The meaning of the obverse inscription is also uncertain, though it probably stands for ducis[sa] it[erum], meaning "duchess again."
