ANNAM: Thieu Tri, 1841-1847, AE 60 van, B-175, 53mm, trach cap dang thi, an thuy van the in Vietnamese Chu nôm script, seemingly lightly gilt long ago, VF, R, ex Nicholas Rhodes Collection.

In 1837 a new series of large heavy cash (phan or van) coins were begun. They were valued at 60 van and weighed 25 to 30 grams each and are basically commemoratives as each contained a poetic verse on the reverse of 4 or 8 characters. They were discontinued at end of the reign of Tu Duc in 1883, but privately made imitations were produced until the mid-20th century. Photo size reduced.
