AQ QOYUNLU: LOT of 316 coins, large study group of mostly late period Aq Qoyunlu silver coins from a variety of types, rulers, mints, denominations, and countermarked issues including some scarce coins, a very interesting lot and well worth the time to study, average quality examples, retail value $5,000, lot of 316 coins. Like the Qara Qoyunlu, the Aq Qoyunlu or "White Sheep Turkomans" also originated in north-central Anatolia and eventually took control of most of Iran, Iraq and the Caucasus. Their coinage is generally similar to that of the Qara Qoyunlu. The disastrous defeat of the Timurid Abu Sa'id in 1467, resulted in the Aq Qoyunlu seizing nearly two thirds of Iran and most of Iraq. Coinage in their own name was resumed in AH872 at al-Hisn in western Anatolia and in AH873 through Iran and parts of Iraq, stylistically and monetarily derived from the Qara Qoyunlu precedent.
