ARAB-BYZANTINE: Spanish series, 711-717, AV solidus (4.21g), indiction XI (=713 AD), A-122, W-HSA.8, star in obverse center, indiction date in reverse center, blundered Latin text around on both sides, EF, R. Recent research has concluded that there were multiple mints producing the gold solidi in Spain at this time. The principal mint was not permanently located, but traveled with the governor Musa b. Nusayr. The secondary mints were likely termporary locations, in operation only when needed. The cruder calligraphy on this example points to one of the secondary mints (courtesy Trent Jonson).
