ARAB-BYZANTINE: Standing Emperor, ca. 660s-680s or later, AE fals (3.54g), NM, A-3504, Goodwin type E, star to lower right of obverse, river symbol below cursive m on reverse, blundered ANO type inscription to left & right of reverse, cf. Goussous 140 for similar reverse, lovely Very Fine, RR, from an American collection.

Same obverse die as Goussous 139, with second globus cruciger to right. The river symbol suggests a location in northern Jordan, even across the Syrian border in the region of Daraa. The reverse, with two pellets in the cursive m, almost resembles a smiley-face. Except for the river symbol, the overall design is somewhat similar to the pseudo-Damascus series published by Milstein. Superb quality for this series.
Although rarely in the international news, the city of Daraa was reported as I was cataloguing these coins, the first Syrian uprisings against its current regime.
