ARAB-SASANIAN: al-Qatari b. Fuja'a, ca. 688-698, AR drachm (3.79g), DA (Darabjird), AH75, A-33, Malek-458, with the Kharijite slogan la hukm illa lillah in the obverse margin, pellet at 11:30 and Pahlavi monogram GM at 12:30 in reverse margin, VF, R. Al-Qatari b. Fuja'a was a military leader of the secessionist Kharijite sect. He led a decade-long rebellion against the Umayyad Caliphate and for a time controlled much of Persia. His struggles led to so much death and destruction that he received the nickname "Father of Death" (Abu al-Mawt). Rather than a personal name, the appellation al-Qatari simply refers to his birthplace in northern Qatar.
