ARMENIA: Hetoum I, 1226-1270, AR tram (3.01g), [Sis], Ner-321 (same obverse die), A-1221. Bed-786, horseman right, crudely engraved Armenian legend around // Arabic legend for the Rum Seljuq ruler Kaykhusraw II (1236-1245), with blundered mint/date formula around; struck from locally engraved dies, probably for emergency; lightly cleaned, VF-XF, RR. Nercessian considered the date as AH635 but better specimens have revealed that the "date" is illegible. Nercesian 321 and Bedoukian-786 are from the same dies, the latter pubished in 1962 with references to specimens in four museums. That suggests that this coarsely engraved series, all with the same arabic and Armenian calligraphy, were likely temporary or quasi-official issues, perhaps because the main minting facility was closed or under renovation.
