ASSASSINS AT ALAMUT (BATINID): 'Alâ al-Din Muhammad III, 1221-1254, AR dirham (3.25g), Balad Maymana, AH(61)9, A-1921, Maymana is located in the Faryab province of Afghanistan and is still a significant town; this piece shows that the word before the mint name is balad and the full mint name is completely legible on this piece; same dies as lot 498 sold in our Aucton 53; some light adhesions on both sides; mount removed, VF, RRR. This type bears purely Sunni inscriptions, and the royal inscriptions resemble those of the Khwarizmshah ruler Muhammad. It is the 4th known example of this type (the other three are posted on CoinArchives).
