ASSASSINS AT ALAMUT (BATINID): Muhammad III, 1221-1254, AE fals (2.00g), NM, ND, A-1921I, obverse legend al-mawla / al-a'zam // bird right, formed out of the name letter for muhammad bin al-hasan; without any porosity; several examples of this remarkable type have already appeared at auction, but this piece is clearly of the finest quality, VF-XF, RRR. Alamut ("eagle's nest") was a remote castle built at 2,000m atop a steep mountain north of Qazwin in Iran. For 166 years, it was the center of an Isma'ili state that consisted of a series of discontiguous mountain strongholds in a sea of hostile territories. Most famously, it was where trained assassins were dispatched across the Middle East to carry out high-profile assassinations as a means of defense against its numerically superior enemies. They claimed the lives of hundreds of prominent targets, including several Abbasid and Fatimid caliphs, Seljuq viziers (including the great Nizam al-Mulk in 1092 AD), and Crusader lords. Alamut was finally conquered by the Mongols and partially dismantled, where a substantial ruin remains to this day as a popular tourist site.
