AUSTRIA: CARINTHIA: Bernhard von Spanheimer, 1202-1256, AR pfennig, Laibach, ND (1230-34), CNA-Cn5, LuFr-205, featuring the Duke with sword in his right hand and triangular shield in his left; small cross in the right field // forward facing bust, a lily in each hand, above a triple arch with a battlemented tower between two stars, a sharply struck lovely lustrous mint state example! PCGS graded MS63. Bernhard von Spanheim (or Sponheim; 1176 or 1181 – January 4, 1256), a member of the noble House of Sponheim, was Duke of Carinthia for 54 years from 1202 until his death. A patron of chivalry and minnesang, Bernhard's reign marked the emergence of the Carinthian duchy as an effective territorial principality. Bernhard entrenched a ducal center of force comprising the city triangle of Sankt Veit, where he established a mint in 1205, Völkermarkt, and Klagenfurt, the later Carinthian capital that he had transferred to its present location in 1246. Bernhard's court in Sankt Veit was the site of festive chivalrous tournaments and a venue of minnesingers like Walther von der Vogelweide.
