AUSTRIA: Leopold V, Archduke, 1619-1632, AR thaler, Hall mint, 1632, Dav-3338, KM-629.2., posthumous issue, with "globule" on the archduke's armor at his elbow, crowned and armored half-length bust right, holding scepter and sword pommel // crowned coat-of-arms within Collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece, lovely deep toning with underlying luster, NGC graded AU55. The 1632-dated Taler coinage of Archduke Leopold V comes in three varieties, featuring one lifetime issue followed by two posthumous issues. The lifetime issue features a 'ruffled' look to the armor on Leopold's elbow. The two posthumous issues, however, feature a 'globule' on the armor at the elbow instead, and are differentiated by the width of the shield on the reverse, the latter of which is much more narrow. For this posthumous series, the first was struck under Leopold's widow, Claudia von Medici, as regent for their son Ferdinand Karl circa 1635; the second was struck upon Ferdinand Karl reaching his majority as Archduke a little over a decade later.
