IMPORTANT NOTE - The Buyer's Premium is now $20 per lot or 20% of the hammer price, whichever amount is greater. However, we have also reduced opening bids on lower value items to adjust for the new Buyer's Premium structure, so all-in costs are still very close to what they were in the past. This change in fee structure will allow us to continue to offer coins valued at less than $100 in addition to our higher value offerings. Contact us with any questions.
SALZBURG: Max Gandolf von Kuenburg, 1668-1687, AR 1/6 thaler klippe (4.91g), 1669, KM-215, Zöttl-2019, a pleasing never pierced example! XF. Many of the klippe coins of this type were nailed to doors as talismans to either ward off zealous church authorities or to keep witches at bay during the Zaubererjackl trials ('Magician Jackls process') or Salzburg witch trials. These trials took place in the city of Salzburg from 1675–1690 and were some of the largest and most famous witch trials in Austria. It led to the execution of 139 people. It was an unusual witch trial, as the majority of its victims were of male gender.
