AWADH:LOT of 33 silver rupees of the Banaras (Benares) mint, inscribed as Muhammadabad Banaras, plus 4 copper coins: Silver: type KM-36, rupee: AH1174 year one (ahad) (2x), year one, 1174/2, 1175/2 (3x), 1176/4, year 4 (5x), year 5 (4x), 1179/6, year 6 (4x), year 7, year 9, 1183/11, year 11, year 13 (2x), year 14, year 15 (3x), and year 16; average VF condition, but a few much nicer, and a few have testmarks, a useful study group for this complicated series; Copper: KM-32, paisa with fish, one dated 1194, the others either date off flan or undated, average Fine to VF; retail value $1300, lot of 37 pieces. There are numerous symbol varieties for most years of this series, always in the name of Shah Alam II, struck during his regnal years 1 to 16. For the year 17, the capital was moved from Benares (Varanasi) to Lucknow, but the coins continued to cite the mint as Muhammadabad Banaras until AH1234 and the introduction of the coinage in the name of the Nawab of Awadh.
