AYDIN: Omar Beg, 1341-1348, AR gigliato (3.69g), Theologos (Ephesos), Metcalf -; Schl. 18, 15; coll. Slocum -; Gamb. 995, imitation of the Neapolitan gigliato of Robert d'Anjou; + HONETA QUE FIT IN THEOLOGOS around enthroned emir of on throne of two lions, holding fleur-de-lis scepter and orb // + DE HANDATO DNI EIUSDE LOC around cross adorned with four fleur-de-lis, VF, RR, ex Jean Elsen Auction 131, Lot 473. The Beylik of Aydin was founded at the beginning of the 14th century, after the collapse of the Seljuk state and existed for more than a century before being absorbed by the Ottomans. It included most of ancient Ionia and part of Caria and Lydia. Its capital was the city of Theologos, the ancient Ephesus, which became an important commercial center and one of the main trading posts in Asia Minor, trading with the Genoese of Phocaea, Chios, Mytilene and with the Venetians. To promote these good commercial relations, the emirs of Aydin naturally imitated the silver currency most used in this region at the beginning of the 14th century, the gigliato of Naples.
