AYYUBID: al-Ashraf Musa II, 1250-1254, AV dinar (5.98g), al-Qahira, AH649, A-831, Balog 3, Kazan 664, struck from slightly worn dies, and unofficially citing Musa as the son of the former Ayyubid of Egypt, al-Salih Ayyub! EF, RRR, ex Gamal Amer Collection. Musa II, son of al-Mansur Yusuf, the former Ayyubid king in Yemen (d. AH626), was nominated as the nominal Mamluk king Aybak, who ascended the throne in AH648, but did not initiate coinage in his own name until 652. This piece can be regarded either as the last Ayyubid ruler "recognized" in Egypt, or as the first male Mamluk ruler, after the brief reign of the Queen Shajar al-Durr.
