BACTRIA: Agathocles, ca. 190-180 BC, CuNi double unit (7.66g), Bop-5c, bust of Dionysos // panther before a vine, its left front foot raised, Fine. The source of the nickel in Bactrian coinage remains a mystery, as the metal wasn't extracted or well understood in Europe until the 18th century. Chemical studies of these coins reveal a similar composition to the Chinese white bronze (báitóng), a cupronickel alloy produced in China since the 3rd century BC, and suggest their arrival in Bactria via trade along the ancient Silk Road.
