In 1871, Baden became a founding member of the German Empire, having supported Prussia in the Franco-Prussian War. Grand Duke Frederick I played a key role in proposing the imperial crown for Wilhelm I. Baden kept its local autonomy and remained one of the more liberal and progressive German states.
