Rudolf Mayer, an Austrian medalist and ziseleur, was born in Teschen (now Cieszyn, Poland) in 1846 and died in Karlsruhe in 1916. He studied under Otto König in Vienna and held a professorship at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Karlsruhe from 1886 to 1913.
