BAHRI MAMLUK: Abu'l-Jird, 13th century? glass jeton, A-1046, NLC-6022, medium green, fully transparent, some black internal glass areas (from production), encased in a silver broach, superb example, choice EF, R. Numismatists have argued over the dating of this type, and it has been assigned to almost every Egyptian dynasty from the 8th to the 15th century. Early Mamluk now seems most likely. This piece was formerly in the collection of Balog, author of Umayyad, 'Abbasid and Tulunid Glass Weights and Vessel Stamps, (1976), presented to the present owner, Katalin Uzdi, around 1980. Balog was one of the most knowledgeable scholars for Egyptian glass weights, jetons, vessel stamps, etc.
