BEGTIMURID: Sayf al-Din Begtimur, 1183-1193, AE follis (6.36g), NM, ND, A-1951D, sayf / al-din within square incuse, countermarked on an anonymous Byzantine follis temp. Basil II and Constantine VIII, choice VF on worn host, RRR. Also known as the Shah-Arman, or "kings of the Armenians", Sökmenid or the Shahs of Ahlat, the Begtimurids were a minor Turkoman dynasty centered upon Ahlat, a city on the north shore of Lake Van that was formerly an Armenian center. This is the first example of this countermark we have encountered, so far only known abbreviated as "sayf".
