BELGIAN CONGO: Albert I, 1909-1934, silvered brass medal, ND, 70mm, bilingual native chief's badge, 3rd series; French and Flemish legend CONGO BELGE – BELGISCH-CONGO, inscription CHEFFERIE/ INDIGENE/ INLANDSCHE/ HOOFDIJ (Native Chief) // star and motto of the former Independent State of the Congo, TRAVAIL ET PROGRES, Unc, RR. After the exposure of the Congo atrocities by E.D. Morel and Roger Casement, King Leopold II ceded his Independent State to Belgium in 1908. His CHEFFERIE INDIGENE medals were continued with modified designs under Belgian administration. This is a rare medal, seldom appearing at auction, and this is a sharply struck example with die polish marks and much original luster. They are normally found mounted. This is the finest example offered in a public sale in recent years. Photo size reduced.
