BELGIAN CONGO: Leopold III, 1934-1950, AE medal (142.93g), 1939, 70mm large bronze medal by the prominent Belgian sculptor and medalist Arthur Dupagne to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Cercle Royal Africain; an allegorical representation of Belgium as a European woman standing in the center; she holds a sword in her right hand and a caduceus intertwined with laurel branches in her left hand, symbolizing peace, medicine, commerce, and governance; multiple stylized, semi-nude native central African men, women, and a child are depicted surrounding her, mirroring the Art Deco and colonial propaganda aesthetic typical of Belgian Congo colonial art in the early 20th century; two prominent shields sit at the bottom center, one for the Congo Free State / Belgian Congo and the other of Belgium // CERCLE ROYAL / AFRICAIN at center, stylized Belgian royal crown above; the lower crescent features the anniversary dates 1889 - 1939 styled with decorative geometric divider accents underneath, with original case of issue, Unc. The Cercle Royal Africain was an elite, private colonial propaganda and networking association based in Brussels, Belgium. It was established by the major architects of Belgian colonial rule to gather support, share intelligence, and promote business and military ventures in Central Africa.
