BELGIAN CONGO: Leopold III, 1934-1950, AE medal (217.62g), 1950, Vancraenenbroeck-41, 80mm large bronze medal by V. Demanet, for the 50th Anniversary of the Comité Spécial du Katanga; female personification standing facing, head left, carrying fruit bunch over left shoulder and resting right hand on tree stump covered in flowers, shield with star set on ground by her right foot; in the background, outline of Belgian Congo flanked by 1900-1950, with the Katanga area textured and emblazoned with CSK logo // cowherd driving five oxen right, toward person squatting before traditional house; in the background, scene of industry with coal mound, power lines and billowing smokestacks, C. S. K in exergue, AU. The Comité Spécial du Katanga (CSK) was a parastatal created in 1900 by the Congo Free State and the Compagnie du Katanga. It was responsible for administering the huge Katanga Province on behalf of the state, and also for exploiting the province's mineral resources. After the establishment of Belgian Congo, the CSK handed over its administrative powers to the provincial government, but remained responsible for many aspects of development in Katanga until its dissolution in 1960. The region of Katanga then proclaimed its independence from the newly independent DR Congo and became a short-lived breakaway state.
