BENGAL: Iltutmish, 1217-1236, AR tanka (10.75g), [Lakhnauti], VS[12]77, G-B18, horseman, holding mace in his right hand, galloping left // Nagari sri above the name iltutmish, minimal weakness of strike, without any testmarks or banker's marks; fantastic strike, with full legends on both sides, the finest we have seen! lovely VF-XF, R.

The VS date is equivalent to AD1220/21 and is the earliest known numerical date on an Indian coin, engraved in Nagari numerals (earlier numbers as regnal or issue years are known, but not as actual dates; e.g., the fanams of Orissa).

CORRECTION: For lot 623, correctly (12)77 is the oldest numismatic date for silver, but 1262 is known for gold (type Goron-B3 of Bengal).
