BENGAL PRESIDENCY: AE 4 cowrie pattern (1.40g), ND (1792), KM-Pn11, Stv-10.1. Prid-365, East India Company balemark / scales, hexagonal flan, struck at the Soho mint in Birmingham, NGC graded PF63 BR, RRR, ex Paul Stevens Collection. This tiny coin, and a minuscule 1 cowrie piece of about 0.35g, were intended to replace the shells and cowries used throughout India for small change, but the idea was never accepted by the EIC. It is reported that 50 pieces of the 4 cowrie coin were struck and presented to Robert Wissett, at the EIC office in London.
