BENGAL PRESIDENCY: AR rupee (11.16g), Allahabad, AH1214 year 26 (sic), KM-—, apparently an unpublished type issue under the EIC, lustrous AU, RRR, ex. Deepak Haritwal Collection. The Allahabad mint fell to the Nawabs of Awadh in 1773 (AH1186/87), who struck rupee at Allahabad until the mint was allegedly closed in AH1211 (July 1796 to June 1797), then briefly reopened upon the British during or just before May 1802 (the end of AH1216), but permanently closed soon after (the British rupees are known dated AH1216 and 1217, reported but unconfirmed for 1218). However, the Allahabad fort was ceded to the East India Company on 21 February 1798 (6 Ramadan 1212). This rupee is clearly dated AH1214 (June 1799 to May 1800), and was likely issued by authority of the EIC, either within or near the fort. Both Paul Stevens and Kapoor & Master cite no coins struck at Allahabad between AH1211 and 1216.
