BENGAL PRESIDENCY: AR rupee (11.60g), Murshidabad, year 6, KM-460.15, in the name of Alamgir II, issued by the Nawab of Bengal, nice strike, Very Fine, R, ex. Eck Prud'homme collection. Murshidabad fell under British authority after the battle of Plassey on 23 June 1757 (8 Shawwal 1170), as the local nawab, Mir-Jafar, effectively ceded to the British a few weeks prior to the battle. He remained in charge at Murshidabad until the British replaced him with another nawab in 1760. Year 6 of Alamgir II fell in AH1172-1173, hence this coin should be regarded as a British issue, bearing the same sunburst symbol as those minted at Calcutta at the same period. Issues of Murshidabad struck in years 1 to 4 of Alamgir II lack this symbol. All rupees of Murshidabad in the name of Alamgir II are listed in the KM catalog under the Mughals as type #460.15.
