BENGAL PRESIDENCY: AR shumshary rupee (10.76g), Allahabad, AH1217 frozen year 26, Stv-8.8, KM-—, in the name of Shah Alam II, with the English letter A added in the center of the regnal year 26, some light porosity near the rim, only known specimen outside a museum, VF, RRRR, ex Paul Stevens Collection. This is last issue of Allahabad under the British. According to Stevens, the letter A refers either to the mint name Allahabad or the name of the last mintmaster, Richard Ahmuty, who was discharged from his position after it was determined that the last issues were slightly debased, and this factor may explain why this piece is noticeably lighter than the AH1216 year 26 issues of Allahabad.
