BENGAL PRESIDENCY: AR shumshary rupee (11.17g), Allahabad, AH1216 frozen year 26, Stv-8.7, KM-586, in the name of Shah Alam II, with symbol above jalus, date 12.16 with central pellet, choice VF, RR, ex Paul Stevens Collection. Allahabad was acquired by the East India Company in 1801 (AH1216), after which the mint altered the design by replacing the obverse star with a ball. The mint was permanently closed in 1803. Mint records state production of the shumshary rupee from May 1802 to April 1803. The term shumshary derived from the Persian word shamshir, which means "sword", first added to the obverse design in AH1210 by the Mughals.
