BENGAL PRESIDENCY:LOT of 12 silver rupees of Muhammadabad Benares mint, with daroga mark A (KM-40): AH1190 year 17 (2 pcs, 11.33g & 11.22g), 1191 year 17 (11.29g), 1193 year 21 (2 pcs, 11.29g, 11.26g), 1194 year 21 (11.27g), 119x year 22 (11.28g), 1195 year 23 (scarce date, 2 pcs, 11.27g & 11.5g). 1196 year 24 (11.31g), 1202 year 28 (11.20g), and 1202 year 29 (scarce date, 11.26g), all VF or better, a couple with 1 or 2 small testmarks, retail value $450, lot of 12 pieces, ex Paul Stevens Collection. In "The Coins of the Bengal Presidency", Stevens has arranged the Muhammadabad Benares "fish" rupees by daroga marks, of which there are 13 or 14 different marks (mark H is tentative, as he says, maybe poorly engraved mark D). Mark D, used for nearly 20 years, and mark N, the last version, used for 7 years, are the the most common, with marks marks I, J, L and M also relatively common. The other marks were shortlived and relatively scarce. Issues dated AH1190, 1191 and most of 1192 bear only the regnal year 17, but from some point in 1192 until 1221, all bear the year 17 together with the actual regnal year. The last issues, dated AH1221-1229, freeze the regnal years 17 & 49. There are a few nazarana strikes on broad flans, not represented here.
