BOLIVIA: Carlos III, 1759-1788, AR 8 reales, Potosí, 1774, KM-55, El-12, assayer JR, good strike, superb luster, NGC graded MS63. In 1731, Charles III became the Duke of Parma and Piacenza as Charles I. He was able to conquer the Kingdoms of Naples and Sicily in 1734 and was crowned king in 1735, becoming Charles VII of Naples and Charles V of Sicily. When Charles became King of Spain upon the death of Ferdinand VI, he abdicated the thrones of Naples and Sicily in favor of his son Ferdinand. According to historian Stanley Payne, "Charles III was probably the most successful European ruler of his generation. He had provided firm, consistent, intelligent leadership. He had chosen capable ministers….[his] personal life had won the respect of the people."
